I have a regency energy saver series water heater that leaks from the overflow pipe, it was leaking about 5 gallons a month but has become progressivly worse (About 5 gallons a day). Can anyone tell me what I should be looking for?

by over flow I assume you mean the temperature/pressure relief valve. This valve may be defective or may need to be cleaned out. Try lifting the lever on the valve several times and let water flow through the valve. Release the valve and see if the leaking stops. If not the valve probably needs to be replaced.

Or you may need to install an expansion tank to allow the hot water to expand as it heats up.

This expansion gets progressively more as the weather, and thus typically the incoming water temperature, drops.

The lower the incoming water temperature, the greater the difference it must be heated. Thus the more expansion the system has to accommodate.
