We just moved into a home with hot water (baseboard) heating. Apparently, the system has a so-called summer/winter hookup which allows you to continue using the boiler to supply hot water over the summer. What exactly is a summer/winter hookup, how does it work and how do I know that I am not using the electric hot water heater as my primary hot water source? Given the current heat wave here and our constant need for air conditioning, my electric bill will be high enough without tacking on charges for hot water.
