Hot Water Odor

We have a hot water heater at a cottage that only gets used 2 or 3 days a month. After 6 months or so the hot water begins to smell like rotten eggs. I once drained it, poured in some clorox, refilled and drained and the odor cleared up. I dont want to have to do this every 6 or 8 months. Any suggestions??
