My gas water heater is leaking water from the top of the unit around the inlet pipes. Their seems to be a lot of corrosion on the top of the unit that reminds me of battery acid on a car battery. The unit leaks for a while and then stops. The unit is only 3 years old and I have never drained it until today. Please help!

It sounds like advanced corrosion from the installer not using dielectric fittings to prevent galvanic corrosion and electrolytic action.

Mychael: It is possible that a noodnik handyman forgot to clean the excess soldering flux from the
piping. This will cause a corrosion
problem that will persist as long as it remains on the piping. Wash off the flux and green stuff and paint it with an oil based paint and live happily ever after.
