A question for the pros:Im doing some research on toilet parts and I see that little (very, very little) has been written on toilet seats. Whats your experience on the quality of solid wood vs. plastic vs. all those assorted composite materials? Any manufacturers stick out (for good or bad reasons)? Thanks.

Here it goes depending on application which toilet seat is used. Being Professional plumbers there is no one seat fits all. For example Open front seats are required by the board of health in the better plumbing /health codes for use in public areas. Non absorbent materials is another requirement. Barrier free design (ADA) American disabilities Act is another code enforced type of seat. Residencial seats can be made of almost any material and are made of anything you can think of. Church seats are one of the top brands on the market conforming to various plumbing and health codes. They even make seats conforming to ASTM ( American Standards Of Testing Materials)As Master Plumbers we are supposed to know which type of material are allowed under various codes. Did you ever see a stainless steel seat? Think about PRISONS? Do you think the prison system would want a seat readily removed by inmates? Well now WHICH application were you asking about? Toilet seats come not only with open ends and elongated and less cover and any combination there of they come in various APPROVED materails. Dont you feel better knowing that toilet seat selection is now a science? Hear about the Japanese toilet seat that recently caught on fire? Have a great one and keep asking these fantastic Questions. : A question for the pros:These days solid wood is a misnomer unless you go to a specialty manufacturer and buy one of cypress, teak or mahagony or oak which will withstand moisture (big bucks) with real brass hingers. The wood seats commonly seen are chipboard, or pressed sawdust which is painted. A heavy grade solid plastic in the $50.00 range will last a long time because of the color going all the way through and the hinges being an integral part of the seat. This is for residental seats. Commercial seats in solid plastic are even heavier. Hope this Helps ROD

Did you bother to explain how to test for REAL BRASS as opposed to brass plated? Did we bother to enlighten him on the Various types of resins used and the heat treating methods? How about the round front seat as opposed to the enlongated and both types of open front seats? Rod we could discuss seats and their manufacturer for hours. The new seats and how the tensile strenth is so much stronger to the old counter parts. Amazing stuff about seats and their manufacturer. How the bolts are taken for granted yet on the better made seats conform to Federal specifications and how seats are made for ships, and other means of transporation also differ as to weight and flamibility as PER FCC and ICC and Bureau of shipping as per Coast Guard/Navy specifications. The history of seats is also something that needs to be addressed. Like the Gold seats of the kings or the Marble seats and the hot seat. Have a great one.
