A few months ago I noticed a faint hammering noise in the cold water pipe when I turned on the water. Lately, the noise has increased and is very annoying. If I just barely turn on the water (hot or cold), the cold water pipe rattles until I open the valve all the way. Then when I turn off the water the hammering starts again and lasts for a few seconds. It happens with toilets, the dishwasher, washing machine, and every faucet. Can you bleed air out of the pipes like you do with a cars brakes? If so, how do you do it? Thanks for the help.

Try turnning off various fixtures under the link, washing machine, water heater etc. and see if it stops.good luck

Thanks for the help.Water hamer otherwise known as hydrolic shock is a very dangerious condition resulting from the shock waves hitting the sides of piping. This shock can burst a pipe quite easily. There are several causes for this condition.1- The activation of quick closing valves ( solenoid valves) washing machine, dish washers, automatic ice makers etc. This can also happen from other Quick closing valves such as single lever faucets or shower bodies or toilet tank ball cocks. A lose washer will all so make sounds like a rattling sound. The simplest way to alleviate to is to 1- Check the size of your distribution piping and the pressure and we can calculate the velocity of the water. 2-Install an Air chamber to act as a shock absorber. 3- Check your piping especially on the horizontal for proper hangers.Long runs with very few proper supports.Clevis hangers instead of lousy band iron. Try each faucet to try to isolate the the one causing the problem. You may need someone to open and close valves fast as you walk around trying to locate the exact pipe as sounds travels along piping and fittings. Good Luck Sylvan
