When I drain a small bucket of water out of my steam boiler every week or two the water is rusty at first and then runs clear. Recently, however, I find small white particles or flakes in the rusty water. Is this some type or mineral deposit? Calicum perhaps? Is it harmful?

I have been draining this furnace on a fairly regular basis for several years and only recently noticed these particles. They are not in the drinking water.

The flakes could be calcium or other hardness deposits flaking off, or some teflon dope pieces. There would be no harm from them.
