: Twice in 2 weeks my water heater apparently had a pressure build up and the water overflowed to the out side….I released the pressure with the pressure valve. What is causing this build up?There are several reasons your TP valve may be releasing water. The TP valve releases water if either the water pressure gets too high or if the temperature gets too hot. If there are no restrictions between the water heater inlet and the water main then any increase in water volume flows out to the main. It could be that the water main pressure is getting higher than normal, it could be there is a restriction such as a pressure reducing valve between your water heater and the water main and that valve is not bypassing correctly. It could be a defective TP valve. It could be the water getting too hot.
