Prefered piping for two separate wells into the same domestic system

I have a home with two wells. Currently both are connected to the same pressure tank. Usually only one pump will rum if both are supplied with power. The newer well (approximately 30 years old) will not cycle if the older (age indeterminate) well is running. Is there a preferred method to connect both wells to the system, using one as a primary and the second in reserve mode in times of high draw? (perhaps filling the pool, irrigating the garden etc?)
