elec hot water heater

i just replaced the heating element on my tank which is about 15-20 years old. but i did not note the wireing on the lower unite. there are 2 elec blocks one with 2 blk wire and another with a blk traveling back up to the top (like a common ) and also a red and black the 3rd on the bottom is red and attached to the outside of the tank as well. this is the wire in ? ..where should it be reattached
