Is there any concern besides shortened service life of the expansion tank to installing it directly above the cold water inlet on the water heater? The cold supply pipe turns down behind the wall and runs under the floor to the rest of the house. The instructions show the expansion tank should be installed below a heat trap. Thanks!

Many hot water heaters are sold with a heat trap in the inlet side. you can feel the cold water side and see if its hot after the heater has been sitting a while with no water being used.most of these tanks just screw on and with three or four ells you could add a trap.
