I bought this electric water heater 5 years ago and it started leaking through the tank. Unfortunatley I can’t find the receipt and the home depot that I purchased it at will not take it back. Is there anyway I can track it to them by the serial #. If not do you have any other suggestions other than to keep better track of my receipts!

If you bought the water heater 5 years ago, there is a good chance that it is out of warranty. Some water heaters have a 1 year warranty, some a 5 year warranty, and others have a 10 year warranty.

What is the serial number on the water heater (this typically will have a date code in it to tell when it was made)? Some water heaters even state when the warranty expires on the label.

If the water heater was made, based on the week and month in serial number, over 5 years ago and you do not have a receipt showing you only purchased it 4 1/2 years ago, then you are stuck with replacing it at your cost if this only has a 5 year warranty.

The 801 heater is an 8 year warranty. Your problem is that Home Depot now carries GE heaters. My Home Depot still takes Reliance back and replaces them with GE, but in your case, since they do not want to do it, take it to Home Base. They now stock Reliance and use the serial number in place of a receipt. With both HD and HB, I have exchanged many Reliance water heaters and have never had a receipt.
