repairing hot water heater

I have 2 yrs old rheem hot water heater which works intermitently. So I went and replaced the thermostat. Still it doesnt work. How can find what went wrong. Should I replace element or get it dignosed by a pro?

Ram: Your post mentioned that you changed the thermostat. Does your heater have a second thermost at the bottom of the tank that you may have overlooked. The lower thermostat does most of the work after the initial start up of the heater. If this is the case replace the lower thermostat after verifying that the lower element is in working order, Lots of luck…Bud
