I have recently purchased an old house which has had some renovations to it. When I turn on the hot water tap (in the kitchen only) the pipes make a loud vibrating noise. This is particularly bad if the tap is opened a small amount only. Once the tap is at full flow the problem reduces. There is no noise once the tap has been closed, therefore unlikely to be water hammer.

        Any suggestions

          Grahame,
It sounds like the washer is causing your problem. Change the tap washer and see how it goes. You can buy anti-hammer valves that have a spring to stop vibration and water hammer. Could also be a burr in the pipe or tap that resonates in the wter at certain flow rates.
Glad to see you spell your name right.
          Regards,
          Grahame
