plumbing problem – rumbling pipes

I have a low rumble noise somewhere in the pipes that occurs when we turn off the water. A few months ago we were having water pressure problems– the pressure was too low, so we turned it up a bit. We have since reduced the pressure again, but the rumble still occurs. It does NOT, however, occur every time, and it generally lasts for ten to fifteen seconds. If we turn the water back on and then turn it off very slowly, the rumbling always stops. Anyone have any suggestions?
