What is the recommended height off the floor for the drain pipe, or does it matter? We are replacing a vanity with a pedestal lavatory. We know that our hot/cold feeder lines will not be hidden behind the pedestal, so well install fancy handles, and rigid pipe. However, does it matter how high off the floor our existing drain outlet is? Dont we just need to extend the sinks drain pipe down to an S trap and then line it up with the current outlet in the wall? (A plumber that we spoke with thought we may need to raise up the outlet pipe).

I usually rough my drains in at 18. But you have to be careful with the dreaded pedestal basin. They are not bad if the back of the pedestal is fully open from floor to basin…..but I have seen too many that only have an opening from the basin to halfway down the pedestal. If you have the pedestal basin, the p-trap and a tape-measure, you could figure out the optimum rough-in height, leaving at least one inch of room on all sides of the trap, and allowing for the pop-up drain mechanism…..Lou
