i have a new reliance electric 501 hot water heater, after installation the pressure relief valve keeps leaking, so i figured it had a bad pressure relief valve, so they gave me a new one it did not fix the problem!!! now they tell me i need to buy a expansion relief tank for thermal expansion, or the water pressure is to high… funny to me my other hot water heater was 17 years old and never had these problems, any input on this would be greatly appreciated..ed

ed; My guess is that sometime during the service life of your old water heater, your city changed your water meter to one with a check valve in it. You may not have noticed with the old water heater, as its t&p was probably stuck. Now that you have a brand new t&p, one that we know works the problem becomes apparent and the only solution is to add the expansion tank….Lou

The average useful life of a T&P valve is about 5 years. After that, it may look operational, but for all practical purposes, you might as well have a plug screwed into it. That is why plumbers are advised to operate relief valves on the water heaters in the customers homes. It may work, but not shut off and need to be replaced after being tripped, but that is still better than having it not operate and making your survivors replace the house.: i have a new reliance electric 501 hot water heater, after installation the pressure relief valve keeps leaking, so i figured it had a bad pressure relief valve, so they gave me a new one it did not fix the problem!!! now they tell me i need to buy a expansion relief tank for thermal expansion, or the water pressure is to high… funny to me my other hot water heater was 17 years old and never had these problems, any input on this would be greatly appreciated..ed
