Septic smell in basement.

I recently purchased a 23 year old home with a septice system. I have noticed a strong sewer smell in my basement under the following circumstances: If I use my washing machine. (Which is located in the basement.) If someone takes a hot shower in the upstairs shower. Or during periods of heavy rain.I have checked the roof vents and they appear to be clear.Thank you,John Lammers.
