We have an electric wh, which trips itself off each night. After resetting, the hot water is SCALDING. Don’t know if this is related, but when this started, we had a few power surges (lights flickered), and one occasion of blackish water. Is thisan element problem, or thermostat? If so, is replacing either of those things ourselves viable, considering we have NO plumbing know-how at all? Thanks…

This is similar to asking if you can take an airplane up solo on the first lesson. You can get away with it if you are gutsy. The repair takes plumbing, heating, and electrical knowledge to prevent fatalaties or injuries.
You will be handling high voltage and water in the same appliance. The result will remain a potential bomb in your home. Are you ready to repair your electric wall socket? This is far more dangerous; probably the most dangerous appliance in your home.

There are sites that will show you how, step-by-step. But as there is a reason for professions like priest, doctor, lawyer, brain surgeon, others don’t try to do them alone. Call a plumber, let him take the risk he is licensed for, and the cost won’t kill you.
