I just built and moved into a new home with a septic system. It is built on sloping land in the woods. I immediately noticed a sewer gas smell surrounding my new house. The contractor says the hill and trees are preventing the gas from the roof vent from dissipating into the air (some kind of air inversion?), but none of my neighbors seem to have this smell around their homes. Could there be any other cause for this smell that should be checked? When the health department checked the soil for a perk test, they recommended a few feet of another soil be put in the drain field over the NC clay. If this was not done, could the smell be the result?
