Smell in bathrm

I have been living in an third floor apartment for 3 months. I have one main bath and a bath in a guest rm. Every since I have lived here there has been an odor in this quest bathrm. The sink is vented under the sink and they have replaced the vent several times. They have said that when the comode flushes it pulls the water out of the sink trap thus allowing gas back into the bathrm. The smell is not a typical sewer gas smell. I took baking soda and washed it down the sink and the comode.The odor wasnt as bad for a day but it seems to be coming back. The odor is not a familiar one. Any ideas as to what the problem could be and the solution. It has the maintenance crew stumped.
