: Our house is old. We have an add-on bath in the basement. When we run water in the sink, we get a strong sewer gas smell for about 10 seconds and then it goes away. The drain pipe goes down, turns back up and then turns back down and goes straight down through the floor to join the bathtub drain. It then travels a few feet and enters what I am guessing is a one-way flow controller of some type (its about the size of a motor oil can, and the water enters it near the bottom and exits it near the top). After that, the drain joins the kitchen sink run and enters the main drain from the toilet. There is no problem in the kitchen. What can be happening betwen the bathroom sink and where the bath sink drainage system joins the pipe from the kitchen?sounds like you have a s-trap draining into a drum trap. both of which are not used any more because of what you describe, adding an auto vent on the bath sink drain may help.
