My 5 year old hot water heater has all of a sudden started to overheat the water and then quit heating. The reset button will restart the heater but the problem will reoccur several days later. My plumber came two days ago and said that the thermostats appear to be working and the elements are working. What could be wrong? I see that the water is extremely hot again this evening.

Karl:–From your post , I would guess that you have a bad lower thermostat,or a shorted element, in that order. Replace the lower element, and all should be OK….Lots of luck…Bud.

If the upper thermostat is the fixed temperature model, change it. If not then the lower element is probably shorted out.: My 5 year old hot water heater has all of a sudden started to overheat the water and then quit heating.
