I am winterizing a house and shutting off the electric. The main water feed comes stright out of the ground in an unheated crawlspace. I have shut the main valve (6 inches from ground) and drained the house. The problem is that the main feed goes up to the floor joist and does a 90 where the drain valve is. So there is water left in the pipe from the main valve to the 90 (about three foot of vertcle pipe). Since it is not under pressure and the pipe is insulated, will it expand enough to break the pipe when it freezes? The electric is off so heat tape isnt an option.
