About 6 months ago a twofold problem began in our upstairs bath. Sometimes if you flush the toilet and drain the tub at the same time the basement ceiling beneath will begin leaking. On occassions while draining the tub soapsuds will leak out around the overflow. And finally everytime you flush the toilet the sink will make gurgling noises.

Sounds to me like you have a partial blockage in the line. Snake the pipes and you may fix it. If the water drains away slowly it is a sure sign of blockage which will cause gurgling in other fixtures. Suggest you need an inspection from a plumber to see why the ceiling shows leaks.
