Every time I flush the basement toilet (w/out using it) we notice a strong odor (Smells like sewer). There is no leakage around the toilet area. The upstairs bathrooms doe not seems to have this problem. What could be the problem?

:Usually the sewer smell comes from a nearby floor drain. It is possible that the wax ring under the water closet (toilet) has lost its seal. This is a gas seal not a water seal. The water is directed into the sewer by the water closet. Without a blockage it is possible that the water will never appear around the base of the water closet.
