i have a gas steam furnace. One pipe, that runs from the basement to third floor radiator bangs loudly wen the heat goes on.

No wonder it BANGS as a “Furnace” isn’t supposed to make steam.

Replace this furnace with a steam boiler THEN check your steam line for pitch as it is a one pipe system that supplies steam and also acts as a condensate return line THEN check your radiator to make sure the condensate can return back to the boiler.

You may also want to consider replacing your radiators air vent with a quality one like a Hoffman # 40

my mistake, i mistakengly used the word “furnace”.
The pipe is a very long vertical run, right from the boiler to the 3 rd. fl. radiator.
I currently have a Jacobus brand,”maid-o-mist” air valve, letter “D”.
