JILL, YOU DONT MENTION IF THESE WIRES COME FROM THE BREAKER, OR FROM THE OLD DISPOSAL MOST CODES REQUIRE THE DISPOSAL BE ON A SEPARATE BREAKER. MODERN WIRING IS ENCASED IN A WHITE PLASTIC SHEATH. YOU SHOULD HAVE A WHITE (NEUTRAL), BLACK(HOT) AND BARE COPPER WIRE (GROUND) . THE BLACK WIRE PROBABLY RUNS THROUGH A SWITCH BEFORE IT GETS TO THE DISPOSAL. TURN OFF THE BREAKER ANYWAY. CONNECT BLACK TO BLACK , WHITE TO WHITE, AND THE BARE GROUND TO THE GROUNDING SCREW ON THE DISPOSAL, OR THE GREEN WIRE FROM THE DISPOSAL, AND THEN GROUND TO THE DISPOSAL. THE WIRING IS EASIER IF YOU DO IT BEFORE ATTACHING THE UNIT TO THE SINK.
