Is a Matag 50 gal. 12 year electric water heater a good choice? I want a water heater that will last, and do an effecient job as well. Is there other brands that would be better?

They are all good until they fail.
A lot has to do with the water quality in your area and what you do to maintain it properly.
If you install and forget it your looking for it to fail.
Read the manufacturers literature and follow it INCLUDING testing the T&P valve
Maytag is a great company.
