My water softener recharges nightly onto the lawn via a 20 hose to keep the water from finding its way back in the basement. The grass looks pretty bad. Is the dis- charge safe for septic systems? I have a 30 year old system thats in good shape.

The discharge has a certain amount of salt in it which is why your yard is suffering. Many users discharge into a septic tank. Cliff:…Consider putting in a French or Rubble drain in the same area that you are presently using, and you wont have any surprises with a septic system that has been well behaved for 30 years. Lots of luck…Bud. :

Our county septic tank administrative personnel informed me (when we inquired about installing a water softener with a septic tank) that this would cause problems. He referred to unnamed university studies stating that it disturbed the stratification within the tank and resulted in sludge being discharged into the field instead of sinking to the bottom of the tank. One homeowner in our county had his septic field back up as a result, and there is litigation ongoing. They strongly advise against discharging your water softener into the septic line.
