repair shower faucets

I have a shower hot water faucet that is leaking around the stem. I bought some shower sockets to remove the hot water valve but all they do is slip off. Looks to me like the valves are rounded off. How can I get these valves out? Is there some other tool or tools that will work? Also once I get the valves out what needs to be done to stop the leak? I think there may be an o-ring inside the stem that needs replacing.
