Shower pan (metal lip around) + wonderboard placement

Hi, Im replacing the tiles in our shower. Around the outside of the shower pan is a metal piece that extends up about 1 + 1/2 above the rest of the pan. Where does the wonderboard go in respect to this piece? Is it supposed to just come down to meet it, or go behind it and down to the floor? Does the bottom row of tiles get stuck to it, or is the wonder- board supposed to come down in front of it? Also, I read somewhere that the gap between the base of the Wonderboard and the shower pan is supposed to be at least 1/4. Can anyone tell me why this would be the case and should this gap be covered with mastic or something? Thanks for any help.Vicky
