One of our outside valves that appears to be the shut-off valve for the sprinkler system suddenly burst water. What do you do about it besides shutting off the valve, or how do you fix it, and what could have caused it?

Sounds like a sprinkler system Vaccuum breaker is doing its job.
Call a local licensed plumbing company to make sure your not going to get questionable syphioned back into your potable water system
