sanatizing a private well

we have a contaminated well that we want to sanitize ourselves. We were instructed to put 3 gallons of bleach in the well, let stand for 24 hours, then turn on all inside water and toilets to bring bleached water into home then wait another 24 hours, then flush all toilets annd sinks until bleach smell is gone. We were also told that we didnt need to bypass our hot water heater or water softner before sanitizing the well. Is all this correct? Is it possible to do the sanitizing in less than 48 hrs?

Sanitizing should kill the bacteria for a while and may need to be done again. Ive seen causes that are so bad the brown sludge ha
