We purchased a 9-year-old home, the previous owner did not drain the water heater and it has sediment build-up. We were told not to drain it now because any corrosion on the sides would fall off with the draining water and would create more of a problem than it would help. I noticed on numerous web sites that they suggest draining anytime and make no reference to what we were previously told. Which is true?

Replace the heater HOPEFULLY it is under some type of warrantee. Then you can drain your new heater and realize the savings in energy that the previous owner lost out on BY having the bottom of this tank insulated with crud build up.

Forget the energy saving wanna bet the old owner never bothered to TEST/replace the existing T&P valve also. KA BOOM
