While trying to find the cause of a leak from under the tub, I tried to remove the drain top in the tub. I bought a drain valve (?) remover, but that simply broke the drain guard (cross shaped protector inset into the drain valve). Now are there any suggestions on how to get the drain valve out of the tub so I can check to see if that is where the leak is coming from??

I’ve never heard of disconnecting the tub waste & overflow to check it for leaks. Seems quite similar to leaving your boat in the water and drilling a hole in bottom to drain the water out.
