my hot water heater heater (State 510E, 5 yrs old) has a hissing noise coming out of some sort of vent in the bottom and a constant drip coming out of the same vent…dead or repairable?

: my hot water heater heater (State 510E, 5 yrs old) has a hissing noise : coming out of some sort of vent in the bottom and a constant : drip coming out of the same vent…dead or repairable? It would be quite unique for ANY water heater to have an (intentional) vent in the bottom of the tank. [The only vent as such is the T&P relief valve opening located at or near the heaters top, and this should have a T&P valve installed.] Im afraid that your vent is what is know as a leak, caused by tank corrosion. It is leaking onto the gas burner, causing a hissing or vaporization sound. Your best hope is that it has failed under the warranty — a rare occurrence, but possible. Then you will only be out the labor for replacement ($150.00+). The good newsis you NEVER have to have this expense again. Want to know how? First, I would get a five-year warranty tank (Rheem and Ruud are great brands). Then I would buy a secondary anode (one that goes into the hot water OUTLET side of the heater. [Merely remove and discard the nipple that comes in the new heater, and screw the secondary anode into the opening.] You have just DOUBLED your heaters life for a few extra bucks (as well as increased the corrosion protection). Now….write the date of installation on the front of the heater and check the PRIMARY anode just before the end of the ten-year life. [The primary anode has a 3/4 plug filling. It looks just like a large 1 1/16 nut on top. If you bought one of the above brands, you wont have to hunt for it AND it wont require a gorilla to loosen it!] Replace ONLY the primary anode when a total of 5 – 6 of core wire is exposed (iron wire located at the center of the anode). Now, you are all set, NEVER having to replace another heater. AND never having to worry is the bottom will fall out while on vacation, turning your house/basement into a swimming pool.GOOD LUCK!!!!DARREL
