We have a conventional 1500 gallon septic tank, typical installation. The vent connecting the bathroom & kitchen plumbing connects directly to the septic tank drain from the bathroom toilet. I have a very noticeable setpic tank odor coming from this vent; and, unfortunately the smell drifts down the roof into a porch area of our house.Any suggestions on how I might eliminate this odor problem coming from the roof vent?Thanks, Bob Julian

Bob: A septic tank treatment product is needed. No not advise you to bend your vent pipes or use a motor home vent. Once you have the septic treatment product (enzymes) in the tank DO NOT allow bleach or other chlorine products to get. They are Kryptonite to living enzymes….Good Luck!

There is a product called Septa Logic that is made up of bacteria that has been very efective in the hog industry for reducing waste and odor in hog lagoons. This product also digests and liquifies the waste in the septic tank and drain field to reduce solid build ups.

I have odor when taking a shower that is definately the septic tank. We bought the house around 7 months ago and the 1000 gallon redwood tank was pumped then. We discovered the smell a couple of months ago and are having the tank pumped again this week. Any idea why the thing smells only when we take a shower. Also, we have since made the washer drain into a grey water system but I think the thing filled up do to over use and an inadequate leach system. We live in Boulder Creek, CA and there are a lot of trees on our land. Any thing you could suggest would help. Vent stacks are designed to remove foul gases from our septic tank drain lines and allow the water to flow to the septic tank. The higher the vent stack the less likely you are to smell the gases…..except….the stack uses the heat from your home to keep ice from plugging the stack. A high stack will plug with ice. Heat tape or any direct source of possible heat ignition is not an option…(vent stack gases can explode and burn). Your only option is a passive, odor absorbing/destroying SWEET FILTER.
