Water Leak

I have a pin hole leak in the cold water line near an elbow. I have turned off the water and I was wondering if there was some way to temporarily fix this problem myself (simple) before I have to call a plumber. Also, I have a electric hot water tank, since I didnt turn off the circuit breaker, will damage occur to the hot water tank since I turned off the cold water?Thanks for your help!!

: : Turn your electricity off to your heater to be on the safe side as siphonage could occur and drain your heater and burn your element out, depending on the material of your water pipe you could do a few simple things; if the pipe is made out of galvanised steel screw a self tapping screw into the hole,you may have to pre drill, if the pipe is copper silver solder the hole or use a compression fitting to fix the leak. These are only temporary measures, before calling your plumber.

If the leak is not too close to the elbow, try a hose clamp with a piece of rubber (both should be available at a hardware store or gas station) Place the piece of rubber directly over the pinhole and tighten the clamp up over it. If there is a lot of rust or corrosion around the pinhole, clean the pipe with steel wool or sandpaper prior to clamping You should shut off the circuit breaker to your water heater whenever the water is off. I realize that this is not a timely reply to your question dated sept. 1996…However you have by this time probably experienced another pin hole leak in your copper piping or fittings, and I can offer you some really good advice on how to avoid having to deal with these costly and aggrevating leaks. Kens post was right on and is the fastest, and easiest way to take care of a leak until a more appropriate time can be found to deal with a proper repair. There is however another issue that should be addressed, and that is the cause of the pin hole leak in the piping. I have taken the liberty of leaving a web site address at the bottom of this note.
