on/off faucets

I just installed the two hoses for my washing machine, and I tightened them properly and used washers as provided. when I turned on the faucets? controls for the water to the washer, both started leaking from the middle of the tap where the screw is attached. When I shut off the taps, there was no more leakage. What should I do? Do the taps need to be replaced, or just some sort of washers replaced? Do I have to shut off some other taps/faucets before I attempt to look at the ones near the washer? Thanks in advance for your help! Terence.
