The right tool for this job sounds like an 18″ or 24″ pipe wrench, a heavy hammer and sometimes even an acetylene torch with a fairly large tip on it.
Now one of the reasons plumbers call themselves plumbers is the amount of right tools they have for the job and the experience to use them.
I am only guessing here, but something tells me that if I awoke this morning and decided to do what you do every day in and out, I may have a problem too.
Do what you know and save the hard stuff for those that do it every day.
