: 2 new heaters, home and rental property. Water smells like sulfer and tub is brown after eaCh bath. Installer said to remove a part. Maker said no, dont, but pour in a gallon of bleach. That doesnt last long and I dont want to bathe in bleach water. Renter and I furious. What to do??There is a bacteria that reacts with the magnesium in the anode rod to form the rotten egg odor. Chlorine bleach would kill the bacteria…they might come back. Replacing the anode with an aluminum anode would probably work…or removal of the anode. The water heater wont last as long without an anode.Lots of information about water heater problems in the water heater section of my website.Bill Lund
