If the leak is not too close to the elbow, try a hose clamp with a piece of rubber (both should be available at a hardware store or gas station) Place the piece of rubber directly over the pinhole and tighten the clamp up over it. If there is a lot of rust or corrosion around the pinhole, clean the pipe with steel wool or sandpaper prior to clamping You should shut off the circuit breaker to your water heater whenever the water is off.
