I am trying to use an existing (1.5″ sch 80 steel) vent stack by lowering a tee(originally set for a vanity sink) to a lower level to accomodate a new clawfoot tub. The vent stack is cuerrentl set into the bell end of an existing 1.5″ cast iron pipe, the lip of which extends up fro the slab about 3 inches. The tub clearance( to the bottom at the drain hole is about 5 inches.

1)What is the best way to remove lead and oakum from the existing bell joint? there is a potntial fire hazard from heating with a torch.

        2) If I am able to mount a tee (steel) flush on top of the bell joint, the center line will be about 4″ above the slab. If I install a p-trap (presuming this type will work) will there be enough clearance to make the connection to the tub so that the drain will work.

        3) Would I be better off building a platform for the tub (say 8″) to asssure room for the connection.

You could heat the lead joint and use a screw driver to splash the molten lead out, it could be hazzard or use a drill and drill it out then use a screw driver to peel out the rest of the lead.

Your “T” connection must be below the tub for proper trap install.

The only time I like to put a tub on a stand is for people who do alot of dog washing or in a Kennel.
