I recently had a sump pump go out. We had a 3 day downpour and the pump just shorted out. I did not realize it until about a week later. The water had reached nearly the top of the sump. We then bought a new pump and now it is working but it has been a week now and I am still getting water dripping slowly (about 2 drips a second) from the exterior drainage pipe into the sump. This in turn is kicking on my new pump about once every 4 hours. What I am wondering is: Is this just a bunch of backed up water around my foundation that is slowly moving into my sump? Or do I have some sort of other problem? In the past, we have rarely had water in the sump at all. And I don’t think the pump had to work very much.
Thank you very much,
Brad

Turn off pump and let water fill intank and pump it out at night and do that untill it stops, what happen water backed up into drain tile and filled it up and since the pipe is level it will take awhile for it to drain out give it time. Mine sometimes drains for 4 days.

Thank you for your information. I have another question. Should the pipe that takes the water from the pump and out to the side of the house have a hole in it? Mine has a small (pen-size) hole about 4 or 5 inches from the top of the pump. When the pump goes off, it sprays water back into the well and up into the drainage pipe.
Thanks,
Brad

The pump is working as it is doing what it was installed for,to pump the pit out when the water in the pit reaches the desired float level to turn on and discharge the water.

Some manf. of the pumps tell you to drill hole in pipe so when pump starts up it is not pumping againts a head of water, it is easy on pump that way.

I told you wrong about hole in pipe, its there so pump will not pump againt air in pipe.
