I recently moved into a home and in the next lot is a meter pit monitoring sewage waste. This pit is ommiting a foul odor. I am foremost concerned if the gas is dangerous? This pit is in a residential area (school,church, and homes surrounding the pit) and I want to know if any plumbing codes restrict a meter to be in a residential area? What kind of preventative measures can be taken to stop the smell? Can the pit be enclosed in a small building?

It should have an airtight cover on it call local Plumbing Dept and report.

Air tight cover?If that is the case then you would have to vent it.Then you are back to square one.
