When installing a steel bathtub, does the tub need to be supported underneath the floor? I plan on using 2×4’s anchored to the wall under the tub lip, but I did not know about under it.

As long as the tub is sitting on the flooring, that is sufficient. Most steel tubs also have a structure on the bottome that rests on the floor to give additional support.

You are doing yourself a great injustice even thinking of a steel tub. Why not consider Cast Iron or americast or even fiberglass? ANYTHING but steel
