I’ve got an older house, and discovered lead shielding under the wood platform that one of the toilets was mounted on. I guess that it used to be commnon practice to put lead shielding under there, but why, and was it required for some reason if so what? I presume that the practice of putting lead shielding under toilets is no longer done?

Most decent plumbing codes frown upon a toilet being placed on an absorbent surface for obvious reasons.

This could account for the lead under the bowl
