I am considering adding stand-pipes in my basement as a way to protect against sewer backups. My house has two floor drains and a shower drain in the basement and my local hardware store recommended putting check values in the shower drain and one floor drain, and a stand pipe in the other floor drain. Will this work? Any hidden dangers with the suggestion?

Forget the standpipe and just go with the check balls in the drains. could be time to have your main line cleaned.
