I own a 1940’s georgian and we have awful smells coming from our basement, but that travel through our house via the vents. I assume it is sewer gas, and I don’t know how to rectify the problem. Cleaning products poures into the drain only mask the problem. My questions are who do I call, what will they probably do, and how much will it cost to fix. Is it anything I can do rather than hiring someone?

Fist make sure your floor drians have water in them.if not pure a bucket of water in them and make sure you can see water in the trap.
if it does look around your basement at your pipes and see if there is a broken drain or pipe going to your stack.
